September: The Corner We've Been Waiting For
Summer in Kansas is not subtle about its departure. It lingers the way only true heat can — the steamy, close kind that fogs your glasses the moment you step outside, that fills even the wind with warmth so that the breeze offers no relief, only a rearrangement of the heat itself. You stop fighting it somewhere around the middle of the season and simply wait. “Fall”, you think. Fall will come.
And it does. It always does.
As I type this, rain is falling on Little River — real rain, the kind that brings in a cool that will stay, that wets the pavement, and darkens the soil and reminds you that the world has not forgotten how to be gentle. A cool week stretches out ahead like a gift. Milo and Molly, freshly bathed and wearing their fall kerchiefs, have already decided that this weather suits them considerably better than what came before. The prairie is exhaling. So are we.
You can feel the season shifting in the store itself, if you know how to read it. The ice cream that flew out the door all summer has slowed to a leisurely pace, and in its place, we're watching soup ingredients find their way into baskets — broth and noodles and all the quiet, warming things that belong to this time of year. There is something deeply satisfying about that particular turn. It happens every September, and every September it feels like coming home.
The Market has been busy in all the best ways. While summer did its best to slow us down, we were cleaning, reorganizing, and making room — and the shelves are better for it.
We've completely revamped the cereal aisle, and your favorites are back where they belong. Grape Nuts, Honeycomb, Apple Jacks, and more — bright boxes lined up and ready for crisp September mornings with nowhere particular to be.
New coffee flavors are in, arriving just in time for the season of warm mugs and slower starts. Our ramen selection continues to grow — more varieties, more options, because good noodles deserve serious shelf space. The mac and cheese offerings have been updated too, because some comfort foods are simply meant for a Kansas autumn, when the windows are cracked and the air finally carries a chill worth noticing.
For those of you who like your energy with a little edge — we've expanded our Ghost flavors and C4 selection. And something a little different: we've brought in Kitsch hair goods, a fun new find that somehow fits right in among everything else we love about this store.
September in Little River goes golden in a way that makes even the most ordinary errand feel unhurried and good. The light slants differently now. The mornings are worth stepping out into and in the evening, a football game can be heard. And for John and me, this particular September carries something extra — we've broken ground on our house build, which feels exactly right for a season that is, in every sense, about beginnings.
